What is the average reading speed?
A 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies with 18,573 adult readers puts the average silent reading speed in English at 238 words per minute (WPM) for non-fiction and 260 WPM for fiction. Reading aloud is slower, at 183 WPM. Brysbaert (2019), Journal of Memory and Language
These figures are for English. Reading speed varies by language and script, so compare a result in another language with your own earlier tests in that language.

What is a good reading speed?
Choose a pace at which you can explain the text. Compare your quiz answers as well as speed; this practice test does not assign a grade level.
How is WPM calculated?
Words Per Minute (WPM) is calculated by dividing the total number of words in the passage by the time taken to read it in minutes. For example, if you read a 300-word passage in 1.5 minutes, your reading speed is 200 WPM. Our test measures this automatically and also evaluates your comprehension.
How can I improve my reading speed?
Choose varied texts, remove distractions and review missed answers. Use a comfortable pace and reread difficult sections. No percentage improvement is guaranteed.
What is the average reading speed by age?
This tool does not provide age-based norms. Compare similar passages in the same language; difficulty, purpose and counting method change the result.
Does reading speed decrease comprehension?
Use the comprehension questions to check what you understood at your chosen pace. A higher speed score alone does not show better reading.
How long does this reading speed test take?
The test typically takes 1-2 minutes. You will read a passage at your normal pace, then answer a few comprehension questions. Choose your preferred difficulty level and genre before starting. Results are displayed instantly after completing the comprehension questions.
Is speed reading real?
The RSVP tool displays text at a selected pace. It does not prove that every displayed word was understood. Check understanding separately.
